The Right Kit
As the older generation gets even older the “Granny Factor” for internet use tends to diminish. By that I do of course mean your Granddad trying to access, or even understand, e-mail and the web.
My folks are the same unfortunately, and like many people of a certain age they feel left out by the revolution that is the internet. Thankfully technology is now at a stage where these people can get all the good bits, without the bad.
A few years ago I watched, and tried to help, as my parents bought their first PC. We all went through the learning curve of mouse use and keyboard stuff, it was a trial. Recently my Mum has got herself a laptop but it still means a battle with Windows.
So what’s the solution, well of course it has to be tablets. Instant boot, very easy e-mail and internet and none of the crap that goes with it. Think even my parents would be able to handle YouTube with a Tablet. So I am going to try and talk my Mum into one, and take her through the pitfalls of buying said same.
Android or Apple? Known make or one of the cheap units? Lots of choices and to be honest you need to speak to someone who knows the ropes. I have owned both iPad and Galaxy, as well as a Archos for all of an hour.
The internet should truly be for everyone, despite age or ability, because there is genuinely something for everyone out there in internet land. It’s all about the right kit for the right type of user.
